Here’s a story not all that uncommon:
Two network marketers of equal intelligence, equal ambition, and equal ability sign-up with the same MLM business.
The first one sets-up a “plain Jane” WordPress blog site that starts getting a trickle of traffic and leads in less than 90 days. Best yet, he’s noticed. He’s in the game.
Meanwhile, the other network marketer of equal talent drops $1K for a professionally designed website, loses a twice that on PPC advertising, spends dozens of hours looking for the perfect Facebook and Twitter automated tools, plugins, and a handful of guru training courses. This guy never gets a single lead in his first 90 days. Worse yet, he goes entirely unnoticed.
Why is this? What happened?
The MLMer with the plain Jane site got to work on those things that mattered, and as far as using the Internet as a tool to create the kind of attention and authority that generates traffic and leads did a few VERY important things the other guy didn’t…
The guy who got results did the following:
- They found their voice by consistently creating content.
- As it pertains to finding their voice, they experimented with headlines and unique hooks that struck a balance between meaning + fascination.
- They developed relationships with other leaders and/or up and comers, and also contributed guest blogs and/or recorded interviews with those people.
- They developed relationships with other leaders and/or up and comers to create content that could be used for lead gen. In other words, they split up the work, and shared the leads.
- They were singularly focused on getting traffic, and making calls to action to convert that traffic into email subscribers. The emphasis was always on building the email list.
- They automated nothing, and just rolled up their sleeves to build up their social media networks using their own content and healthy mix of others too.
- They were obsessed with refining their approach to all of the above to increase results.
Do the work. It can’t be avoided.
If you think I’m missing something, add it in the comments below.
Bottom line is this: you don’t need anything fancy; automation will only set you back at first; ignore technology for technology sake, and focus using the tech to accelerate a “human business”. Then own it.

I followed Ann Sieg over 4 years ago. Paid SBI the $$$ to build website. Posted affiliate marketing links as instructed. This was before WordPress blogs were mentioned. Spending more on web hosting costs than earning via website. Pretty frustrating, so it seems good bye to SBI.
Things change fast, but the checklist I’ve offered will never change. Not through SBI or WordPress, or the next platform. It’s not about the platforms, or the affiliate links, it’s about getting attention. Stick with it Joe. Thanks for your comment.
