Ann Sieg Leadership Series (part 1)

I’m going to start a series of videos on leadership.

I was inspired to create this series for a number of reasons.

For one, when I surveyed my email list an overwhelmingly amount of my subscribers wanted leadership training from me.

The other simple part of it is that more than anything else people buy into your leadership. This isn’t just for network marketing. This is in every walk of life. Whether you’re a doctor, restaurant owner, pastor, teacher, etc.

As John Maxwell said, “Everything rises or falls on leadership.”

Now the reason for the series is that the study of leadership and personal development is virtually inexhaustible.

There is never a time where you arrive and it’s now a done deal. We are always a work in progress.

With that said, there was a recent instance, just a couple days ago in fact that ultimately triggered or more so inspired me to do this particular video on the topic of becoming aware of our patterns. Because it’s our patterns and habits that ultimately shape us.

So I’m going to share this story with in my video.

I will say as a leader to myself I was disappointed in my reaction for this particular situation. But on the other hand I thought what a great learning lesson to share with others.

So as you watch my video consider for yourself your own habits and patterns. Then develop the ability to think retrospectively and what you could do differently moving forward. How can you change the outcome the next time through?

That’s what really counts more than the “mistakes” you make along the way.

    I’m reminded of that poster I used to see over copy machines (when I was an employee…..): “Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.” Developing composure and self-control, and exercising it in all circumstances, is vital to long-term success. Who wants to work with a hot-head????

    Sometimes we just have to count to ten, don’t we?

    This really resounds with me, as a homeschool mother of 4 young children, going on 5, and part time dance instructor, in parenting and in leading a class. My children and students reflect my behavior, if I am reactive, they will be too, which leads to chaos. My calmness is imitated, and our day runs so much smoother.

    I appreciate this great reminder!

    Thank you so much Ann…boy…have I seen myself handle those situations wrong in the past! I tend to be rather expressive…so learning to take that step back…breathe…and let the guidance come from within…well, let’s say…it took some training. Today, I am much more AWARE of myself and typically handle things better, I am happy to say!

  5. Thank you Ann for sharing this message. It is exactly the lesson I have been SLOWLY learning over this past year while dealing with a very reactive and highly stressed individual. I often found myself being pulled into the drama and spending hours wringing my hands, declaring how wrong he was, losing sleep over the situations that would come up and basically granting him the power to push my buttons.

    I’ve finally realized his issues were his issues and not mine to solve or change. With that said bye recognizing the patterns of my behavior I’ve been able to let go of all the anxiety and negative emotions that had been consuming my time and energy.

    The next time I must deal with him and I find myself being drawn into the drama of the moment I will hear your words in my head….Seek instead to develop self-control, composure and calm.

      Because your physiology is so locked into a particular behavior with this individual I would recommend you use some kind of object trigger to help change your reactions to this particular individual. As this is something that can be very difficult to change.

      So to counter it find an object that has a strong positive emotional trigger for you. If you have frequent situations with this individual then you might want to have it be something you actually carry on your body at all times. For example, it could be a locket with a picture of your grandchild. Just to grasp that object or look at the picture could be a very strong trigger to alter the negative emotional state you’re seeking to avoid.

      Some how our brain operates at a different level when we use physical object lessons.

      This is just a suggestion but all to say you have a very powerful behavior pattern you want to break. This will take an extreme amount of objectivity for you to reverse these deeply embedded neural pathways.

      You can do it, Ruth, because you are an amazing overcomer!

  6. Thank you Ann for the advice and encouragement. It will be nice to not have to deal with the pit in the bottom of the stomach anymore and to be to take a deep breath, smile and walk away or to just let it go will be a major victory. The screen saver on my I-Phone has a beautiful picture of my granddaughters. I will look at that before every contact with this person. I am already breathing easier.

  7. Ann, I grew up thinking leaders were born and not made. You’ve given me a whole new, fresh perspective on what leadership is, and how to go about accessing and achieving that mindset. From now on, I will be really cognizant of what leadership entrails and what’s expected of me. Thank you!

  8. Thank you, thank you so much for making this video Ann. Not only have you a fabulous message but it couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I was given an opportunity yesterday to go into a major reactive state in relation to a communication I received. Yet being aware of how this is one way I’ve created havoc in my life in the past, you know that “Shoot first, ask questions later” kind of thing, I made a decision not to react, to sleep on it, and then I watch your video this morning, perfect! I now have a much clearer idea of how I want to respond, and most importantly the state I want to respond from,which is very different from 24 hours ago.

    I’m so glad you talked about that whole issue of giving our power away. That’s something I’m becoming more and more aware of and even though I haven’t got past the beating myself up for it stage yet, the more I learn to wait, listen for that guidance you talked about and respond rather than react, the more I see how I’m gaining mastery in my own life over those patterns that don’t serve me to indulge in anymore. As a recovering hothead I guess I should congratulate myself more for the progress I’m making!

    The book you mentioned was written in 1918 and I remember someone once telling me that old books are generally legally available as free downloads online after a book is a certain age. I did a search for this book under the term “theron dumont the power of concentration free pdf” and a number of options come up to download this legally for free. I believe that any of those old classics including ‘The Science of Getting Rich’ are available online for free legal download. (‘m quite sure this information is correct but in the event I may have this wrong I’d be obliged if someone would point it out.)

    I was just catching up of your newsletter and your topic on Leadership Quality caught my eyes. Most of us act out of patterns of habits and behaviour. I was told that it takes about 21 days to break a habit… a new pattern of thought needed to replace the old.

    Good leadership is essential everywhere… a good model for others to emulate as Success in the company depends on it – it either rises up or causes a downfall.

    WOW, I just found your blog and listened to your first Leadership Quality Video. Such an imparation of truth without condemnation. You have such a deep gift to teach while touching those places that need revealed and restored.
    Your experience revealed in this video is something that every leader with a heart to be a servant has also done. And your take away is the fruit that will remain.

    Continue to do what is your passion and comes natural to you for those called to you. Know that although many rise up and say thanks; there are many many more that may not; but they will rise up changed and even more important; are better equipment to change others.
