Social Media Is Irrelevant, And So Are You If That’s All You Talk About

Here we are at the foot of 2014, and some of you are STILL pre-occupied with social media. Don’t get me wrong, you need to be using it, but if you’re trying to make a conversation around social media, I hold the opinion that you’re irrelevant and boring.

Are you?

Entrepreneurs and businesses need help with content creation, and that extends into social media, but in itself, social media is boring to talk about. The real discussion to have is about your content.

Here’s why: social media is only a tool to reach more people.

We can argue the details endlessly. We can trump up the virtues of HootSuite. We can announce the premature death of Facebook. We can parade Google Plus. It doesn’t matter.

When I’m talking with my dad about craft breweries (tools), we talk about the beer (content).

When I talk with my college buddies about rock bands from the 90s (tools), we talk about whether the music still resonates (the content).

When I talk about a good book with Ann (content), we never bother to talk about the publisher (tools).

Should you put ads on Facebook? Oh jeez! If that’s your concern, you’ll soon discover that you have much bigger worries.

Should you use Pinterest or Instragram? Are either worth your time? (who knows?)

Should you schedule your tweets? (who cares!)

Social media are a set of tools. They’re not all that interesting. What’s interesting is the content you create and the platform you build and the people you attract. Keep your focus.

If you can’t convey your ideas in a way that stands out, that are simple to understand, and resonate with an audience, the game is over before you begin. Sorry, your Facebook cover image isn’t going to save you.

It’s so easy to get all “flustrated” over which social media platform to use — how often to post — etc. etc. etc. I just finished reading Gary Vee’s Jab Jab Jab Right Hook Book and starting wondering about the VERY things you mentioned in your post, Eric. I’m glad you brought me back to what is REALLY important. Content. Plain and simple. I know Gary Vee would agree that, without solid content, we shouldn’t even be posting — unless of course we just want people to know what we ate for dinner.

  6. Great post Eric. Most people I see locally (real estate agents) just regurgitate other peoples content but do not have any of their own. They are using the tools but do not have content of their own, which as Jerry said, tells their story and helps spread the word about them. Thanks for bringing this to everyone’s attention.

  8. well – yes – I would say that social media is a whole lot of different tools and how they are used and what they are used for are not relevant – per se – yes a camera is a camera but how it responds to a professional’s command matter as much as what the professional is commanding it to do – and if it does not do that it is a worthless tool – then there is the tools in the program of photoshop – there are so many and there an infinite number adjustments for each of those tools that is is mind blowing – but unless the user of those tools understand – becomes knowledgeable and calls upon the exact right tool at the very moment that he or she needs to to create the image that is wanted – well there goes one problem and then unless the computer that is being used has enough RAM and computing power to response when that tool is used – well there is another problem and so on –

    and when it comes to social media – there may seem to be a great deal of things that it can do but unless the individuals that we are attempting to communicate with are interested in what we have to say or share with them then having the greatest content in the world – a story – a message – a photograph – a work of art then it happens to be meaningless at that point – but let’s say for a second that there just may be something that we have that a person is interested in – like a work of art (content) and then we utilize this tool on a Facebook page- like promoting a post – unless we understand and are presented with the real and true facts of what this promotion (spending money) activity actually does then we may be wasting time money and effort – since in reality the promoted post which you pay for only says that the post goes to the top of a certain number of individuals’ news feed – it does not say that they looked at that feed today – it does not say that they read that post or looked at the image(s) in it – but in either case you did pay for it – so is this a waste of money if not one person or even only a small percentage of people looked at it or read it or click on the link that the post had?

    yes content is very very very important – we can say that just about anything worthwhile starts with good – great – unbelievable content – but the tools for reaching people are extremely important – and from a certain perspective yet – at this point in time – they do leave a great deal to be desired – the mostly do not do what people think that they do and are in no way as efficient as my own “Doubling Project” –

    so from a certain perspective I can see that it may make sense to get people or encourage people or dismayed people from ONLY talking about these social media tools and marketing and crossing boarders and disseminating information with them – but on the other hand there is a great deal of mystery as to what is being presented to individuals as these GREAT tools and yet very little is really understood as to how they DO and DO NOT work and what they CAN and CANNOT do and for all of the hype and instructions and money being spend and all of the programs from SEO to FACEBOOK FAN PAGES and LINKEDIn User Groups and BLOGS as well – there has to be some way for an individual like myself to not only not waste so much time but to get the maximum out of what is available there at the present moment – as well –

    I would rather be a BEST SELLING AUTHOR and the best author in the world and not SELLING to anyone and the way to be the fist is to not ONLY focus on CONTEXT but to get the SELLING tools right as well –

With this concise post you have freed me from the guilt and shame of not being able to master everything on social media while trying to figure out how to use Prosperity central and build my blog. ..Got my favorite pen, my notebook and my cuppa tea–time to get writing! Focus…First things first. Social media can wait.

  10. In other words, don’t sweat over all the nitty gritty details, get the foundation in place, then the rest will come together! I wouldn’t have bought tickets to see the Rolling Stones recently, if they were going to stand up there and tell me what instruments they use and why they chose them:-)

  12. Hum….Content Is King, But Distribution Is Queen and She Wears the Pant. Neither approach guarantees results. However, the end goal is the same: publishing great content that gets shared on social media which puts wheels on the car you built to carry your business in.

    Without wheels – the car sits still with a Queen inside screaming at the King

    You can built it but that doesn’t mean they will come – you have to show case the King and make him look good for others to come see him,

    Good content on your website/blog is a must. Writing things that make people take a 2nd look or bookmark your page is great news to any marketer.

    Showing your personality in your post – connecting with people/customers showing your quirky side makes people follow you to see if they want to do business with you. Who wants to spend money with someone they dislike – no one.

    I know Eric social media is not your fav – I love ya anyway.

    I have a soft spot for social media and I love the way the good content makes the tires squal when good content goes out there and a customer finds me and places a $300 order without ever saying a word to each other. :-) 10 days into the month – $29,000 worth of product has gone out. Thank you Twitter and facebook

  13. For years I focused on what social media platforms I should be using. I tried to learn all I could about them until one day just as you stated in this article I started to focus on content and building relationships. I don’t think the focus should be heavy on what tool you use, it should be on adding value to the world. The tool is just the delivery method. As long as you have a valuable message you can grab someone’s attention on almost any social media platform.

  14. I love it. In you face telling it like it is. So important not to lose sight of the fact that content is king…now if we could all write content like that would be a dream come true!

  15. Great blog post. I feel you should never base your passions off of the hottest thing. Technology will continue to change over time the most important thing is to be passionate about what you are passionate about and share your talents with the world. If you look back over how far our technology has come over the last century there’s so much we never could have predicted as far as where we are right now. Always be yourself that’s and live your passion that’s where you find the true value in wealth.

  16. I’ve worked hard on how I write. On being me. Personal but not private. Boring posts about social media just kills me! Today I even liked how I asked for support in a contest. I’ve learned so much from you Eric! :-)
