A Short List Of Where To Start If You Don’t Know Where To Start

A lot of people are starting from scratch. They’re trying to figure it out. They want specific direction and guidance. Many, too, are restarting.

Below I’m providing a list you can use to guide you as you start from scratch, or restart.

We’re building that here at 80/20 Marketing. Ann’s building out an “inner circle” that you’ll hear about sooner than later. And privately, we’ve already started to help the people we bring into this inner circle.

I’ve been helping out, as I do. The experience has forced me to ask the most basic of questions, and think about business, about opportunities, about what it means to start from scratch.

If I were to start building a business where I believed (and I do) that social media and marketing were blending in to be one and the same, and could be extremely useful for accomplishing my goals, I would do all of these things:

HINT: I AM doing these things, and I am starting over from scratch (with the exception of my role here)

  • Keep a spreadsheet of people. Make notes about if they’re a prospect, a customer, a colleague, a mentor, a resource, or whatever. Keep tabs on your relationships. Build that network.
  • Set up a blog. Use WordPress. We recommend Ty’s MLM Blog Theme. A blog should be the heart and soul of You. It’s where you’ll communicate, host, learn and explore. The blog and your email marketing efforts work together tightly.
  • Which brings me to the email list. Set one up from the start. Use the email list to reach out to people, and deepen relationships by building trust. It’s also a mechanism for sales. No matter what changes with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn or Google Plus, etc, your blog and email list will always be the heart and soul of your business.
  • Use 1-2 social networks (no more) to network. Be human. Reach out to people in a very human manner. Don’t choose Facebook -or any social network- just for its popularity. Instead, choose a network because the people you want to connect with will be there, and the quality of functions and features is what you’re looking for.
  • Here’s an important one here… Create a content strategy that funnels people closer to working with you in the way that you want them to. Make decisions about when and what to create for your blog, your email list and your social networks. You have to do the work and put in the time to know what is best. In all of the different channels, your goal is to keep people interested, educated, and warmed up for further contact from you.
  • Reach out and connect with both the leaders and the up and comers of your industry (add them to that spreadsheet once you do)
  • Decide on your goals right away then determine how what you’ll do to reach those goals, and then… here’s the point… track it. Choose 3-5 metrics for what you’re doing. Track it closely.
  • Set a numeric goal that you see every day. For example, I will successfully create a new stream of semi-passive income by October 1st, 2012 that generates between $1K and $2K per month on average and endures for a minimum of 10 years.

That’s it. It’s a simple list, but also long enough.

  1. Love this–>” I will successfully create a new stream of semi-passive income by October 1st, 2012 that generates between $1K and $2K per month on average and endures for a minimum of 10 years.”
and your tip about connectign with leaders is important. Making lists is something new to me and I’m learning how to build them and create content that keeps us in touch.

  2. Such useful information. Thank you. Keeping a spreadsheet of people is a great idea. Thank you so much.

  3. Hi Eric,
I enjoyed your article on Where To Start If You Don’t Know Where To Start. Keeping a spreadsheet of people is a great idea. I also like your suggestion of choosing only 1-2 social networks and no more. Having a strategy to create content is essential as well as setting specific goals.

I know it is helpful to track results but I am a little confused on what you mean by metrics and if you have a suggestion on the best way to track results.

Thank you for providing such excellent value to those of us who are building an online business.

    Ruth

  4. Hey Ruth,

    Good question.

First things first, you must match the goal and the metric. So if my goal is to get more attention in my industry, and I’m using my blog as the main place where I want to go, I might decide to measure unique visitors, page views per visitor, and time on my blog (using Google Analytics). I *might* even break it down by the referring source, as well so I can measure the quality of traffic from each site – in this sense – I know that despite getting more traffic from Facebook, the traffic from Google is more quality (because that traffic spends more time on my blog).

Here’s another goal to metric match up. My goal might be to have a one to one dialog via personal message with ten people per day on Facebook. Here, I would use an excel spreadsheet to document the amount of time I spend on Facebook per day, the number of comments I made, the number of friends request I sent and/or accepted and obviously, the number of personal emails I had sent. Prob’ly would add another field for phone follow, and if these 10 connections per day led to a phone follow up.

In a nutshell, the idea is that whatever actions you do on a daily basis, they each have a goal, and that goal has a means of being tracked over the course of 10-10-30+ days.

It doesn’t have to be technical. It just has to track and paint a picture over time.
