Google Plus Guide | Tips & Tricks For Effective Google Plus Use

continued from Customizing Your Google Plus Profile

Creating Circles

With Google Plus, you can create an unlimited number of circles. Circles house different groups, or segments of people, so if you wanted to communicate with business builders in your downline, you could create a circle primarily for members of your downline.

The same goes for all circles.

Each time you create content, you can choose which circles can view it, making it easier than ever to tailor your content, and updates towards specific groups of people.

Consider just how much easier it will be to target your content around your market, partners and customers.

When you create a circle, no one but you can see what that circles name (or title) is, even those you choose to add into it. All they can see is that you added them into a circle, not what that circle is called.

This makes it easy for you to organize your contacts, so that you are able to identify groups of people based on your circle names.

“Mentioning” People With Google Plus

You can choose to mention people within your content and updates in the same way that you would with Twitter and Facebook.  Use the @ symbol.

Here’s an example: @ChrisBrogan knows his Google Plus stuff.

You can also mention someone with the plus (+) symbol. Both the @ and + symbols work the same way.

In addition, if you find that someone is posting more frequently than what you want to hear from that person, or you aren’t interested in all of their updates, you can choose to “Mute” the conversation so that it no longer appears in your stream.

Using Your “Stream” And Circles

A “stream” is like the timeline on Twitter, or a wall on Facebook with all of your circles’ updates appearing within a single stream. You can choose to browse through streams from all of your circles. Or each circle at a time, which filters your streams to display only content from specific circles. The latter makes it easier to discover new content and updates from segmented groups.

Basic Content Customization

You can customize your content, updates and posts within the Google Plus network, so that it appears in bold, italic and underlined.

Here are the custom codes to use when writing new content for your circles:

Bold your text:  *word* – wrapping your text in star asterisks will bold that part of your text. For example, if I enter in *hello*, the word hello will appear in bold.

_word_ will make your word italic. Just add underscores around the words that you would like to italicize. -word- will create a strike through.

These are just a few quick ways that you can enhance your content while making certain words or titles stand out to your readers.

Create A “Hangout” Within Google Plus

A Hangout is a feature within Google Plus that allows for you and your circles to connect. You can call your Hangout anything you choose, and allow only certain circles to access this communication channel.

First, you’ll need to install the Google Voice and Video plugin in order to create or access hangout.

Click “Start Hangout” from your profile page as shown below to begin:

The “Start Hangout” is located on the middle right hand side bar. When you click it, this is what it looks like…

Google’s URL Shortener

Last quick tip – shorten your Google Plus profile link so that you can easily share with others on your blog, website or within your emails. Plus, it makes the link far more memorable.

There are many different  link shorteners out there. I recommend  http://www.Gplus.to

With Gplus, you can turn a long link into a Gplus.to.

For example, my username with Google Plus is this long thing: https://plus.google.com/112967375868087387048/posts but with Gplus.to it’s now gplus.to/EricWalker. Much better, right?!

This service is absolutely free.

Google Plus Email Option

Everyone who is part of your circles can send you email directly through Gmail. You can disable this by clicking on “Profile & Privacy” and “Edit Visibility” on your profile page.

Add Me To Your Circle

Google Plus will constantly evolve from here, but I trust this Google Plus Guide will always be evergreen, and be useful for getting started.

It’s an exciting time to get started with Google Plus. For many, it’s a new start on a new platform where we can learn from our Twitter and Facebook mistakes and create a better experience on Google Plus.

So if you haven’t yet received an invitation to join, keep an eye out for the public launch, or indicate that you’d like an invitation in the comments below.

Lastly, feel free to add me to your circle!
