The Lure and Reel of Content Marketing

I truly believe everyone can make $50K to million dollars a year IF they can find that “sweet spot” where they find the right combination of their platform and passion.

Imagine earning upwards of $50K to a million dollars a year to talk about something you’re really crazy about. Better than heading into someone else’s office to build someone else’s business, eh?!

But here’s the key…

You have to know yourself.

Knowing yourself means you have chosen…

  • the right topic (for you),
  • the right platform (for you) to create content that keeps eyeballs on the page,
  • and the right unique and irresistible offer for your topic.

Only then do you have a shot at making a little or lot of money being happy.

When I refer to platform, I mean choosing -from the start- if print (text), video, or audio (or a combo) is going to be your main way of communicating your content.

The lure and the reel of content marketing is about the two ways in which you’re going to think about working your content.

The first purpose of creating content is to lure people in.

In order to lure people in you have to create it (duh, right?), post it, and allow people to come to you as they discover it.

The second is to use it as a reel.

This is done by commenting on other peoples’ content as it relates to your own, inserting yourself into existing conversations and actively creating reasons for your audience to come to you.

The lure = content.

The reel = being active on content that relates to your own.

Here’s how to start…

Tell a story

It doesn’t matter if you’re a network marketer, or a real estate agent, or a cashier at your local grocery store. Or all of the above. It doesn’t matter. You have to start by telling a story.

If you’re a network marketer, despite what you might be seeing all over the net, it’s not about marketing hyped up once in a lifetime opportunities. Those are always springing up.

You likely have a day job if you’re involved with network marketing.

Start there.

Start with where you’re at.

For example, let’s say that you’re a real estate agent for your day job (who also has a network marketing business you want to grow). And you live in a town called Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Start by telling a story about Kalamazoo.

Tell everything about Kalamazoo that is unique, and appealing. Tell the story of the town, not just the home you’re trying to sell.

Create a picture for people.

Craft a story that makes people care about Kalamazoo as much as you do. Once you get good at telling this story, people will come back for more. It takes time, but friends will tell friends, and people will begin to pay attention. This is called “affinity.” And affinity is the strongest lure to reel in prospects for your network marketing business because you already have a common ground.

In the meantime, keep luring and reeling.

When it comes to the lure and reel of content, whoever is the best communicator will win.

  1. The title of this post this made me laugh because I’ve been telling my husband he should start a blog called “Stink Bait Marketing”! Attraction Marketing at work!

  2. Another great article, Eric! It highlights not only getting people to your blog or website, but getting people to STAY there and then come back for more. That’s quite the challenge in today’s fast-paced world, particularly with more and more competition out there. But, if you get good at it, you can definitely separate yourself from everybody else enough to be successful.

Thanks again for more valuable content!

  3. What a great article I never actually thought about telling a story like that and living where we do, on the Greek island of Crete, we certainly have a lot of stories to tell. Thanks for that advice, it is one of the best things I have learned tody.

    Take care.

  4. Ann,
Thank you for the time and the love you have for your family and people who are
trying to learn this new business…Many blessing with all you do..
    God Bless
