You’re Really Going To Have To Work To Make “THIS” Happen

little-engine-that-could

This post is focused on your self-improvement. It’s a bit different from our other blog posts that focus on improving your marketing.

Give this a close read.

This post is about trying something new. Trying something new is powerful. Even if … no, especially if… it feels threatening; if it evokes a bit of fear.

It usually involves taking a leap off the metaphorical pier, and into unknown waters. And those waters are freezing cold. That is to say, it’s one heck of a wake-up call to your senses.

To Go Beyond Your Range Or Limits Will Require Discomfort

Are you tired of “getting by”?

Are you tired of EXISTING?

Are you tired of something.

What motivates you to do something different?

Most of us have calluses around the parts of our life that are uncomfortable.

Even though the pain points still exist…

Even though we’d feel better if we moved toward something that fit us more appropriately.

It isn’t natural for us humans to want to feel pain.

But that’s exactly what you have to do to move yourself forward.

It’s NOT life-threatening pain.

You don’t have to quit your job (in fact, you should NOT). You won’t have to shave your head, or get a tattoo (unless you want to). You don’t have to denounce bathing either :-)

It might be something as simple as no longer eating food from the fast drive-thru ever again.

Here’s How To Start

First step: break from the old.

Second step: Choose a path. Start.

Repeat step two every day: START!

Starting is the primary ingredient of doing something different.

Every day.

Don’t believe me?

For nearly 3 years, I did nothing about balancing my life.

A majority of my time was spent in front of the computer. Not enough time was given toward exercise and love to the people that were most important to me. I was caught up with my make money interests.

But finally enough was enough and I knew I needed to start.

On my first day of doing something, here’s what I did. . .

I wrote down all the reasons why I knew I needed to make the necessary changes.

The next day, I looked over all my options for getting physically and emotionally healthy, and creating a necessary balance so I could provide more of my love and attention to those that I wanted to be close to.

That was it. That was the starting.

It didn’t change my world. Not by a long shot. It was the start. That led to the next thing. (and the next thing after that).

This is vital to understand. Action creates more action. Equals momentum.

Escaping Your Own Gravity

Your life is a series of gravities.

You are with the company you’re with and that has some gravity.

You are with the relationships you have, and that has some gravity.

Your habits are all gravities too.

To escape from this, or change them for the better, you have to break out of an existing orbit. To break out of your own orbit, you have to be like a locomotive.

Locomotives are fueled by burning combustible material, usually coal, wood or oil, to produce steam in a boiler, which drives the steam engine.

As you build up your internal fire, you’ve gotta set your sights on a star. You must point in a certain direction.

Be ULTRA Specific

The plans you make don’t have to be grandiose. They need to be ultra-specific.

Don’t shoot for the moon. Aim for the roof. Small changes. By the way, be sure that when you’re creating your specific plan, you’re talking to yourself in terms of where you’re going, not where you’ve been.

Still using myself as an example.

I want to have a better life because right now mine sucks” was lame banner for me.

Compare that to…

I want to improve my life by building up my aerobic and muscular health, lose these “lap top love handles” and have more time in my day to celebrate my love for not just myself, but also for the people that I value most.

See that?

See the difference?

The second one is ultra specific, AND it emphasizes where I want to go, not where I’ve been.

Always plan with a forward-facing goal.

Now Go Be Your Change

What would you change if you knew it’d make your life better, even in a small way?

Here’s one that might fit you:

You want to have no debt on your credit card by the end of the year.

To that end, you have to “kick it up a notch” with your Internet business while maintaining what you’re currently doing with your day job, and start to dig your heels in.

I mean really dig in and DO this!

In order to do that, you know you’re going to have to make changes that feel “ouchy,” but that will get you there.

Change is…

… not life threatening, but it’s somewhat painful at times (and equally rewarding).

It’s going towards a goal (i.e. debt-free card). So it’s specific.

It will hurt, and require habit changes to accomplish. Yet at the same time, it’s not earth-shattering.

What kinds of goals can you see threatening yourself with over the next few months?

What would be the FIRST step you’d take?

How will that both build, and keep momentum?

How will you make the specific changes that build up your internal fire so that you can escape the current orbit you’re in?

All of this is on the personal side of business, but as important as anything on the business and marketing side. It’s more important than anything technical. It has more to do with real, life changing happiness than it does how much money you’ll make. Don’t look beyond it.

  1. The change agent truly comes from within. Being brave enough to see what is not working. Having the courage to admit that change must happen. Making up your mind that fear of change will not hold you back.

For me it was about letting go of disappointment in broken promises and taking charge of my success. It was about accepting the push out of the nest by my mentor.

It is also baby steps for me. Long term results mean for me guarding time boundaries to maintain boundaries.
    But to work consistently.

    Great post Eric.

  2. I just want to say I ‘Like’ this a lot. Feeling numb from too much of too much is a sticky situation from which to induce change, when wanting change is what made us numb to start. Being devoted to a balance in life is by far the healthier and happier way to approach everyday and each new year with excitement and motivation to achieve something more. Otherwise, life seems to be more about dealing with yet another recovery after another, simply due to burnout.

  3. Thanks Eric,

They say when you are ready the Teacher will appear thanks for increasing your visibility so we could follow your lead. This is Great Work Begins on the Inside thanks for being transparent my friend

Hello Erik. I am one of the new members of Renegade Dominate. I just want to let you know that I like this post and is one of the best and favorite post that I can apply. I will reply by simply saying that on the first part, go beyond your limits, you had taken my ideas. On the second part, how to start, is what I am working on. On the third: Escaping negative gravity, being ultra specific, your changes and steps to take, is what I am aiming for. Very important fundamentals that I need to keep in mind. Thank you for sharing and thank you for teaching.

    Best regards.

    Fanny

  5. Hey Eric,

I really appreciated your post today. I cannot speak for anyone else … that would just be rude … but I can definetly appreciate the “laptop love handles” you were talking about. Those babies have gotta go.

You are absolutely correct too about getting started at becoming responsible for our successes as well as our failures. Sometimes we just lose track of the more important things in life. Sure we have responsibilities that need to be met, but that does not mean we must sacrifice our “life” in the pursuit of making a “living”.

I am going to take a look at myself from the third person view and identify what needs to be changed and then set mini goals to begin to become a more productive member of “life” again.

Thank you for the reminder. It was timely.

    Jim

  6. Outstanding post!!! My main problem is sticking to one thing. I guess I have a bit of ADHD. I can only sit in front of the computer for about an hour. I have to get up and go do something else. But after having read your post, Ill try to incorporate some of these ideas, starting today. Thanks and have a great weekend.

    • Hi Lisa, one hour is fine. I can only focus for 30 minutes then I’m onto something else for at least 5 minutes. Then back at the task at hand. You don’t have ADHD. What you say is normal. Work with it.

  7. Dave Drimmie says:

This is a terrific post Eric. Thank you. It adds to a series of events this week that have caused me to “commit” to doing the activities to create a better future for myself and my family – as opposed to the reality of “wanting” a better future……which I now realise has been a false reality……awesome stuff Eric. Watch this space my friend…..

  8. Hey Eric,

Great Post….as I was just asking you this question myself…
Getting out of my comfort zone…
Taking one small step each day…
For me its going to bed earlier so I can wake up an hour earlier
so I can do my DSD plan = listings = money = accomplishments = feeling great = $1000 per month income

I am so grateful that you are my accountability partner Eric!!
    Thanks

    Pat McKeon
