Use What You Have Unless What You Have Isn’t Good Enough

We received an email into our customer support that I want to use as an example to make a point. The customer explained how they were familiar with Weebly for building websites. They didn’t see the reason to learn WordPress (which is what we recommend).

Here’s our take on it:

Keep using Weebly if Weebly is good enough. I will say this… Weebly IS NOT good enough if you can’t own it. I, personally, don’t know enough about Weebly to know if you can own it.

You know you own it when you own your own domain. So if your site is ABC.weebly.com you don’t own it, Weebly does. That is a domain that isn’t good enough.

You know you own it if you’re the one hosting it. If you’re paying Host Gator, or Host Monster or any of the web hosting services a monthly, quarterly, bi-annually or annually you know that you are paying to host the site yourself, and if you’re doing that, you own it. If you don’t host your own site you don’t own and that’s not good enough.

The next question this customer asked was that they’d already started with iContact as their email service provider, and wanted to know if they should switch to Aweber. We recommend Aweber.

I know for a fact that iContact is good enough. Get Response is good enough too. So it Mail Chimp. The rest I don’t know much about. An email service is good if they can deliver as close to 100% of all the emails you ever want to send.

As you’re building your business, use what you’ve been using and familiar with if it’s good enough, and change if it isn’t. Once you start seeing some successes and want to upgrade with your money and/or time, then do so. Until then, make hay with what you have.

  1. Eric, thanks so much for writing this post. I think that when we join the Renegade Team, we are anxious to get started and want to move along as quickly as possible. It can feel a little overwhelming to learn a whole new marketing strategy AND all the technical aspects that support it. By using tools I was already familiar with, I was hoping to shorten my technical learning curve. Your “good enough” or “not good enough” criteria make so much sense and have given me a way to make those critical technical decisions before investing my time and energy. Thanks again.

  2. Hey Eric,

I agree with Josie. It’s reassuring to hear you say “good enough” is “good enough.” I love iContact — have used them for 3 years. It doesn’t make sense for me to switch now, even to Aweber, though PERHAPS down the road I will. As independent business owners, timing is critical. Making too many changes all at the same time would overwhelm me . . . which is never a good thing.

    Thank you again!

    Jory

  3. Eric I found your information in this blog just reinforces the Renegade training so far so keep sending out these tips to help us Newbies stay focused!
