The Importance of Building Your Network Marketing Business Before You Have One

Have you ever wondered how these heavy hitters come into a new network marketing opportunity and within a few months they’re a top earner?

The secret of their success is that they build their business before they start building a downline.

And if you’re asking, “Isn’t my primary business opportunity my business?” The answer is No.

Many of the most successful network marketers out there are not blind to this fact. Study the top producers for a moment. You’ll see that they don’t consider their downline, their opportunity and even their products their main business.

Not even close…

Your Biggest Business Asset

Your biggest business asset is the relationship you have with your list.

You’ve heard it before… the money is in the list.

The real money producing activity is building your list. The sooner the better.

Here’s why…

Think back to those top income earners who basically create a downline out of thin air.

How do you think they did it?

Cold calling?

Home meetings?

Nope, none of the above.

The “Big Doggs” in this industry have been building relationships with their list/target market (which is other network marketers and successful people) from day one. The end result is a nice sized list of a couple thousand people (or way more) who would trust that person with their newborn.

What Happens When the “Big Dogg” Moves To A New Opportunity?

You guessed it.

They let their list know that they found a new venture and a bunch of people jump on the band wagon. The main reason for this is because they have built trust with their growing list by providing valuable information.

They’ve also built trust with their list by being VERY careful NOT to jump from biz opp to biz opp. Trust isn’t built by blowing with the wind.

After this Big Dogg has offered their list so much value and asked for nothing in return the law of reciprocity kicks in. It’s only natural that these people are going to follow the Big Dogg because of the value and leadership they’ve been providing all along.

Word Of Caution

However you must know, I don’t suggest you just build a list and start advertising to them, and pitching them a bunch of stuff without really giving thought to it. You must keep providing value and leadership for the life of your relationship.

Your list will prove to be your most valuable thing you own. Cultivate it, nurture it and respect it.

Even if you have a small list, NOT leading with your opportunity and conducting your business in this way will begin to provide you with success. You’ll see the results a little at a time. As you’re list, trust and leadership gets bigger, the better the results.

Keep in mind that once trust is broken, it’s difficult to earn back.

Who Do You Trust More?

Someone who is trying to constantly sell you something or someone who is going out of their way to truly help you achieve your goals?
Do you think you would trust someone that is willing to deliver everything they have in order to help you find success?

After a little while I’m sure you would trust the recommendations that person suggests. You would trust that person over someone who just tried to “sell” you from the start. I bet you wouldn’t mind getting recommendations from that person because they actually provided value, insight and objectivity with their suggestions.

The Importance Of Relationships

It’s no big secret how the heavy hitters are doing it.

They develop relationships with all the right people and they do it on a daily basis. They build a list of the “right people” who actually know them, trust them and like them. They are continually providing value and leadership to their list without looking for something in return.

This all comes back to building You and leading with the value of you before anything else.

If you have a great list of names with great relationships it doesn’t matter what venture you join. You will have people ready and willing to join you before you know it. The company you’re working with could flop today and you’d still be in business tomorrow.

Start to embrace the true aspect of building a relationship with your list. Once you decide to start growing your business like you should be, money will no longer be an issue.

Go for quality rather than quantity.
Go for the long term rather than the short.
Go for the genuine rather than the superficial.
And finally go rather than stop!

  3. Eric,

I agree with you 100 percent. I really enjoy your blog it is extremely well written. If only more people would look at building their foundation first an delayed gratification the would ultimately get to where they want to go. Nice job!

  4. Marilyn Horne says:

I’m wanting to market my business opp on the Internet and wasn’t sure how to start.
This is good information to take to heart.

  5. Excellent advice. Thanks for the reminder.

As the former Executive Director of two Chambers of Commerce, my primary job responsibility was to build relationships with the businesses in the community. Over a 7 year period I raised more than $1,000,000 from a membership of just 500 businesses… based on trust and the value of what we provided them.

This is even more important online because you can’t get face to face as easily.
I look forward to learning more.

  6. Eric, this is good solid information. It sometimes takes a while to ‘get it’. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard the build your list and relationship story before moving on to bigger things. Thank you
