Be A Self Starter

“Be a self starter.”

This would seem like an obvious suggestion for success.

Especially if you’re an entrepreneur.

I had the good fortune to have this modeled for me in my growing up years. I wouldn’t even know what it would be like to not be a self starter. It’s just way too much fun to be a self-starter.

Hi Anne,
When I was in the military, my Sarge would tell us all the time, “You don’t have to like it, you just have to do it.” And it’s like that with self-starters, we have to do whatever is required of us to reach our goals whether we like it or not. There is nobody forcing me to study, learn & apply. There is nobody making me get up after 4 to 5 hours of sleep to make the calls or write the blog posts. Only my dreams & goals drive me to what I have to do on a daily basis. Self starting comes from within.

  Great question, Kristy. One thing to do is simply ask them, “Do you consider yourself a self-starter”? This would especially important, if for example, you’re looking for potential team builders. The question is totally relative to the situation at hand. The other aspect is simply watch people’s behavior. As a business builder I’m always watching for go-getters versus folks who sit on the side lines.

Hey Ann, I agree with Edwin. I too was in the military and you don’t need some body to tell you what to do every second of the day. If you see something that needs to be done you just get up and get the job done. Though I’m still working, I always find myself taking the lead. After you’ve been in the military for a number of years, It just becomes first nature. So yes, I am a leader and self starter.
